One of my biggest challenges as a sole proprietor was always organization. I couldn't keep track of my day's schedule, forget about shipping deadlines and supply order dates. I was quickly in over my head and way behind, so I knew I needed help. Making the transition from working on my own to becoming an employer was rocky. Tips For Effective Drug Testing

If you are an employer, chances are good that you do not want your employees to be on drugs while they are at work or suffering from the aftereffects of using drugs while they are working. This can make them less productive and lead to a less-safe workplace. However, drug testing can be expensive and it is easy for employers to spend more money than they have to. Here are some tips for drug testing as efficiently as possible in order to be sure that you are creating the most productive workplace possible for a cost that doesn't break the bank.

1. Be Smart About the Drugs that You Test For

Do your research before you choose which drugs that you are going to test for. You will probably not want to test for all drugs because this adds a great deal of expense to the procedure. Instead, make sure that you are testing for the drugs that are most likely to be used in the area in which you operate by the employees that you manage. For example, if the majority of your employees are under thirty years of age, then do research about what types of drugs people this age are doing in your area. Twenty-year-olds are more likely to do certain drugs than thirty-year-olds, and it is important that you make this distinction when deciding which drugs to test.

Next, make sure that you do research about the types of drugs that are generally popular in your area. This is important because popular drugs tend to signify that they are easy to get and are therefore more likely to be used. Doing your research ahead of time can make your testing more effective and save you a decent amount of money.

2. If You're Going to Use Urine Tests, Make Sure the Time Frame for Testing is Short Enough to be Effective

It is easy to pass a drug test by simply waiting a day or two for the drugs to pass out of your system. If you want any urine testing you do to be effective, make sure that you require that your employees take the test within a single day of being notified. Check the laws of your area to make sure that you are within guidelines.

3. Consider Saliva Testing for On-Site Sample Collection

Finally, if you want to collect the sample on-site for random drug tests, be sure that you go with a saliva test, rather than a urine test. Urine tests can be uncomfortable for people to take in the workplace and for people to give. Since saliva tests only involve taking a small, lollipop shaped stick and putting it in your mouth and handing it back to the tester, this tends to be more comfortable for everyone. Saliva tests are also very hard to fake, allowing you to get more accurate results.
